The number 17

Yesterday, Ash Wednesday 17th February 2010 was the 31st anniversary of my marriage to Sukie, my first wife. 17 is a prime number, as is 2 and 1979. And 1 + 9 = 10, 1 + 0= 1, 1 + 7 = 8, 8 + 9 = 17, which is odd in a nice sort of way. 17 has always seemed to be a good number or a date on which things happen to me, and I just like it. In the same way perhaps as the late great Douglas Adams had a thing for 42 (or did he?).

It was also (yesterday that is) the start of Lent and Brian Draper has begun by asking us to be : hungry and give something up - food, alcohol, smoking, a habit, being right. I have contemplated everything including giving up Radio 4, but not actually done anything, and not sure I will. Interesting to see my response to the idea of giving any of these things up - real fear and mild unhappiness and what is point. A lot of it is habit - in the evening, after meditating, I like to light the fire, drink a beer and smoke something, drink 20 cl of Famous Grouse or some lesser brand of Scotch, cook and eat supper (meat and two veg of which one must be green and the other a baked potato) with a glass of wine, smoke roll ups, watch telly or listen to the radio (very rarely to read, or do something creative) and go to bed early. And that feels like heaven.

And get up in the morning, drink three cups of proper Assam loose tea in a pot (Waitrose is best), read and write notes, listen to Radio 4, meditate, walk the dog, feed the cats, dog and chickens, have breakfast (some times), cycle 8 miles to work (not much at the moment as the bike is badly in need of tlc and the weather really isn't very nice), work until 4.30 or 5, cycle home, walk the dog again, meditate and settle down for another exciting evening (see above)
